The EU's rulebook for AI

AI Act

The AI Act is the EU's first rulebook for artificial intelligence. It sorts AI uses by risk level — the riskier the application, the tighter the rules, from outright bans to simple transparency.

What is the AI Act?

The AI Act is the EU's big rulebook for AI — the first law of its kind anywhere. Instead of judging AI by how clever it is, it judges by how risky the use is. The more dangerous the application, the tougher the rules: from outright bans down to a simple "tell users what they're dealing with".

How are the risk tiers split?

Unacceptable risk — banned outright
Social scoring, mass facial recognition in public, and manipulation that plays with people's subconscious are off the table.
High risk — heavy oversight
AI in medicine, hiring, credit, justice and education has to do risk assessments, guarantee data quality, keep logs and stay under human supervision.
Limited risk — be transparent
Chatbots and deepfakes have to make clear you're talking to (or looking at) a machine.
Minimal risk — mostly untouched
Spam filters and game AI can just get on with it.

Why does it matter outside Europe?

Law has a "Brussels effect": whoever writes the rules first sets the standard. The EU market is huge, and global companies that want to do business there often end up applying the same compliance everywhere. So you can be affected even if you've never been near Europe.

What problem is it trying to solve?

AI is moving faster than regulators. The Act wants to draw a line between encouraging innovation and protecting people's rights — let useful AI grow, and hit the brakes on the uses that could hurt people.

Bottom line: the AI Act is the EU sorting AI into risk tiers and writing rules to match — the more dangerous it is, the harder it's regulated.
