Fear of Being Obsolete

FOBO

FOBO is the "fear of being obsolete" stirred up by rapid AI progress — a deeper, more draining shake of identity than ordinary job anxiety.

What is FOBO?

FOBO stands for "Fear of Being Obsolete" — the dread of becoming useless. As AI gets better at writing, drawing and coding, a lot of people are quietly panicking: Will my job be replaced? Are my skills about to expire? That low-grade unease is FOBO.

How is it different from ordinary anxiety?

It's not "I'm not good enough"
Normal work anxiety says "I lack ability." FOBO says "I, as a person, might be pointless." It's deeper and more draining because it attacks your sense of self.
It isn't always grounded
A lot of the fear comes from imagination, not facts. AI handling part of a task is not the same as AI taking over the whole job.

What does it do to people?

A little urgency can push you to learn. But too much FOBO sends people to two unhealthy extremes: frantically buying courses they never finish, or giving up entirely — "if I'm getting replaced anyway, why bother."

How to deal with it

Separate "you" from "your job": what gets replaced is usually a specific task, not a whole person. What stays durable are the things AI still can't match — learning, good questions, judgment. Instead of fearing the tool, use it. People who understand it tend to be the first to stop worrying.

Bottom line: FOBO is the fear of no longer being useful — and the cure isn't running away, it's learning, using, and proving you're still irreplaceable.
