What is on-device AI?

Most AI apps lean on the cloud: your question travels to a faraway server, gets computed, and the answer comes back. On-device AI puts the model right inside your phone, laptop, car or earbuds, so the computing happens locally — no internet required.

Why run AI on the device?

It's faster
Skip the round trip and voice assistants or live translation feel noticeably more responsive.
It saves data and battery
When nothing has to be uploaded, you burn less data and drain less power.
It's more private
Photos, voice and health data never leave the device, so sensitive stuff stays with you.

What can it do today?

Smart cutouts in your photo gallery, live speech-to-text, in-car voice control and wearable health tracking — on-device AI is already inside plenty of everyday products. Chipmakers are also adding NPUs (neural processing units) built specifically to speed up this kind of local inference.

What are its limits?

A device has limited compute and memory, so it can't run the giant models the cloud can. That's why the common setup now is "hybrid": simple tasks on-device, hard ones in the cloud, each doing its part.
